2026 Water Wise Information
💧 Watering Rules Reminder – Effective May 1
As the weather warms and irrigation systems are turned on, residents are reminded to follow the City of Colorado Springs Water Wise Rules, which help conserve water during dry conditions and keep landscapes healthy throughout the season.
✅ Key Outdoor Watering Guidelines (May 1 – October 15)
-
Water up to three days per week
Residents may choose which days to water. -
Water only during approved times
Irrigation must occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. (not both on the same day) to reduce evaporation and help water reach plant roots. -
Prevent runoff and waste
- Do not allow water to pool on sidewalks, driveways, or streets.
- Do not let water flow into gutters.
-
Maintain irrigation systems
- Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.
- Regularly inspect for broken heads, leaks, or standing water.
-
Use water responsibly
- A shut‑off nozzle is required when washing with a hose.
- Hard surfaces (such as driveways or sidewalks) may only be washed if there is a public health or safety concern.
🌱 Irrigation System Best Practices
- Use a cycle-and-soak schedule to reduce runoff.
- Systems should be set to deliver a total of ½ inch of water per watering day.
- Complete watering either entirely in the morning or entirely in the evening, not split between both times, to encourage deeper root growth.
⚠️ Common Watering Issues to Avoid
- Watering more than three days per week
- Irrigation running across midnight (which can count as two watering days)
- Undetected leaks in irrigation systems
- Continuously running indoor fixtures, such as toilets
🌿 Additional Options & Permits
- Water Allocation Plans are available for properties with large or complex landscapes and provide more flexibility within a water budget.
- Establishment Permits are required for new sod, seed, or overseeding and allow additional watering during establishment. Proper soil amendments are required.
